#5198, With Charlotte Greve, Live
Brooklyn-based German saxophonist Charlotte Greve has been around for quite some time, having released nine albums as a bandleader with avant-garde indie pop group Wood River and Berlin-based jazz collective Lisbeth Quartett, as well as other collaborators. Now, she’s back with a record all her own, in which she accumulates and reflects on all her musical influences over the years, from playing classical music to listening to church music as well as metal, thanks to her brother and his friends.
“It’s a meditation for me to swim. That’s when I get my ideas,” says Greve, and oftentimes, those ideas have very humble beginnings: “One thing could be a solo piece, the other one an orchestra, but it’s, to me, the same, because it’s coming from the exact same place, which is a single note.”
Building layer upon layer over drones, either heard or implied, Greve plays atmospheric saxophone and flute textures, synthesizers, and sings ruminating lines, alongside her bandmates Charlotte Jacobs (background vocals & keys) and Buz Donald (drums), for this special live edition of New Sounds. - Sırma Munyar
