1A Record Club: 'Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That’s The Weight of The World)'

1A | Jun 8

From its first few chords, very few songs inspire joy like Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September.”

With hundreds of songs, decades of performances, and more than a dozen members over the years, Earth, Wind & Fire has a rich musical legacy — one that’s born out of founder Maurice White’s love of mysticism and astrology.

Award-winning musician and filmmaker Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is out with a new HBO original documentary about the group. It’s called “Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That’s The Weight of The World).” It’s out now on HBO and HBO Max.

What does the documentary reveal about one of the most influential bands of all time? And what does the widespread popularity of their music reveal about our shifting culture?
