Iran and Israel continue to trade missile strikes

After a weekend of renewed fighting between Iran and Israel, both sides are halting strikes amid a precarious ceasefire.

Fighting escalated on Sunday with Israeli strikes outside of Beirut in Lebanon. The Israeli military said it was targeting Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group. Iran sent retaliatory missiles towards Israel.

Israel also said that it launched two waves of airstrikes across Iran on Monday, including on Iran’s biggest petrochemical facility. Monday saw further exchanges of fire between the two nations.

Donald Trump publicly called on both countries to stop attacks. It was the worst escalation of fighting since April’s ceasefire between Iran and Israel.

What do these events tell us about where Israel and Iran will go next? And how close is the U.S. to being pulled into a larger war in the region?
