Supreme Court issues final rulings of term

1A | Jul 1

This week a divided Supreme Court issued the final rulings of this term. On Tuesday the Court upheld a broad conception of birthright citizenship, rejecting President Donald Trump’s executive order declaring that children born to people who are in the United States illegally or temporarily are not American citizens.

That followed a decision by the Court ruled to uphold state bans that prevent transgender women and girls from participating in female-designated sports and the justices striking down limits on how much national political party committees can spend in coordination with individual candidates. And the Court gave the president power to fire leaders at independent agencies, upending 90 years of precedent.

In recent decisions the Supreme Court has shown sharp divisions along ideological lines. What do these decisions tell us about the direction the Court is taking the country?
