#4882, From New Sounds Live: D-Composed at Merkin Hall
From the New Sounds Live concerts, hear the Chicago-based chamber music band D-Composed play works from a program curated by Grammy-nominated flutist, composer, producer, and vocalist Nathalie Joachim. Listen to the world premiere of "Betwixt" by Joachim and works by Tomeka Reid, Jessie Montgomery, Daniel Bernard Roumain, and Pamela Z. The D-Composed string quartet featured Caitlin Edwards and Khelsey Zarraga on violin, Wilfred Farquharson on viola, and Tahirah Whittington on cello. The collective celebrates Black culture and aims to make classical music experiences inclusive and reflective of the Black experience by highlighting the compositional traditions, techniques, and stories of Black artists in contemporary and experimental music (Donna Lee Davidson, I Care If You Listen).
Hear the Artist-as-Curator, Nathalie Joachim, speak to her experience of looking to Pamela Z as a model for her own career, and how she connected with D-Composed. Members of D-Composed then perform the pizzicatos, lush sweeping phrases, pitch-bending, stomps, and hand-claps from the night's program. Pamela Z joins D-Composed to give the plucky world premiere of Joachim's "Betwixt". The show was recorded in April 2024 at Kaufman Music Center's Merkin Hall. - Caryn Havlik
