#5130, Choral Works

New Sounds | Apr 14

Hear choral music from English composer and sound artist Pete M. Wyer, Ireland’s Irene Buckley, and Iceland’s Hamrahlíð Choir. Plus, music by Philip Glass, and more.

From London-based composer and sound artist Pete M. Wyer, there’s music created for his enormous iForest project at The Wild Center, Tupper Lake, New York state in the Adirondacks. Members of the Philadelphia-based choir, The Crossing were individually recorded – totaling 72 voices -and played back via 24 independent audio speakers in the woodland (the 'iForest'), for a choral piece is sung in Huron. There’s also music by American composer Jackson Hill, who studied Buddhist chant as a Fulbright Fellow in Japan in the 1970s. Listen to his work, Aki no ko-e, or “Autumn Voice”.

Then hear music from Icelandic choir The Hamrahlíð Choir, founded in 1981 by Þorgerður Ingólfsdóttir. It’s a work by veteran Icelandic composer Atli Heimir Sveinsson for choir and strings, “Autumn Pictures” - a setting of short poems- sketches of natural scenes, written for the conductor Thorgerdur Ingólfsdóttir (alt. spelling), for her wedding. Listen to music for chorus with electronics from Ireland’s Irene Buckley. Plus, music by American minimalist composer and pianist Philip Glass that uses voice as instrumental texture. It’s from the score to the silent film Koyaanisqatsi, written for chorus and the Philip Glass Ensemble. - Caryn Havlik
