#5131, Not Quite Jazz

New Sounds | Apr 15

In this edition of New Sounds, delve into jazz-adjacent music and hear musicians who wander far away from its traditional roots. From carefully structured avant-garde to improvisational music experiments, each record offers a distinct lens for your point of view.

The complex melodies in The Lounge Lizards’s “Bob the Bob” and “Bob the Bob Home” sound conversational, anchored in repeating polyrhythms, gaining new meaning at each turn. The experimental collective SML’s “Mouth Words” begins with spoken words that soon yield to expansive chords, combining sampling and synthesis techniques with the familiar sounds of the saxophone, drums, and bass guitar. In contrast, filmmaker and composer Bruno de Almeida’s “Parallax View” from his Cinema Imaginado anthology provides a soundtrack for dreams and life alike, with dark yet warm cornet phrases and eerie electronic textures.

Later, Pharoah Sanders’ and Bill Laswell’s “Gamaka” fuses the electronic music of the early 2000s with the mellow tone of the cornet, played by the same cornetist from the previous track, Graham Haynes. With Dave Harrington, Max Jaffe, Patrick Shiroishi’s “Dance Of The White Shadow And Golden Kite”, the line between jazz and electronic music becomes even blurrier, thanks to sensory percussion elements and effervescent guitar tapestries joining the mix. By the end of the show, David Binney, Henry Solomon, and Mateo Ottonello cement us fully in the gray area of jazz with their take on fusion music interwoven with Uruguayan candombe rhythms. - Sırma Munyar
