Listen to new film scores that may have a mix of classical, experimental pop, and the avant-garde by Scottish composer Anna Meredith, English musician Mica Levi (Micachu & the Shapes), Bryce Dessner (of the National), and the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.

From Anna Meredith’s film score to Daina O Pusić’s horror/fantasy drama film, Tuesday, listen to several excerpts in which she “explore[s] anxiety and tension through extended cello techniques coupled with bell synths and unconventional use of auxiliary percussion”, (Annameredith.com).

Then, hear Mica Levi’s unsettlingly hair-raising score for Jonathan Glazer’s 2014 film, Under The Skin. Levi—the English musician and mastermind behind experimental pop group Micachu and the Shapes allows the avant-garde to be accessible by using hand-made instruments (occasionally vacuums), and glass harmonica. There’s music by the late Jóhann Jóhannsson for the Denis Villeneuve sci-fi mind-bending film, Arrival, along with music by Bryce Dessner from the film Sing Sing. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
