#5161, Modern Music, Traditional Drumming

New Sounds | Jul 13

Hear Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead with a group of Rajasthani drummers from India; the group ÌFÉ who blend Afro Cuban Santeria drumming with hip hop production, and the group, Bizhiki - traditional pow wow drumming meets electronic rock.

Junun (which means “the madness of love”) is a musical collaboration between a group of Indian musicians called The Rajasthan Express, composer and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and India-based Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur. The music is in the ecstatic Sufi music style known as qawwali (made famous by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan), and it's devotional music—sometimes in Urdu, Hebrew, and Hindi, and is built on a percussion-dense and brass enriched groove with everything to love.

Then, hear music by ÌFÉ, a band led by Otura Mun, a singer, drummer and producer who is also a Santeria initiate. He blends the ancient rhythms and chants of Afro-Cuban music with the production techniques of hip hop and electronic music. Also listen to Afro-Uruguyan traditional drumming fused with jazz and electronic music, from another tripartite collaboration between American alt-jazz saxophonist David Binney, saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Henry Solomon, and drummer Mateo Ottonello. Together, the trio recorded with a group of candombe drummers, tapping into the deeply rooted Afro-Uruguayan tradition for some surprising fourth world music, (Bandcamp.)

There's Native powwow drumming augmented by electronic rock in the group Bizhiki - a collaboration between two Wisconsin-based Native singers, Joe Rainey and Dylan Bizhikiins Jennings, along with S. Carey of the band Bon Iver. Bizhiki's 2024 record, Unbound merges powwow music with synthesized voice modulation, contemporary electronic samples and beats, together with traditional drumming. That, plus  K. Leimer’s soundtrack Land of Look Behind, from a film about Jamaica and Bob Marley, and more. - Caryn Havlik
